How to fold laundry and get organized
How to Fold Clothes the easy way to Get Organized
Most of us have heard of Marie Kondo, the organizational master and the creator of the KonMari method. Her method of organizing has become popular due to her best selling organization books and Netflix series ‘Tidying Up with Marie Kondo’. If you have not heard of her let me give you a quick recap about her method before diving into how to fold clothes the easy way and save you time and space.
To begin decluttering and organizing your space, Marie Kondo advises that you start by gathering all of your belongings one category at a time. Once that task has been done quickly go through each item and only keep the items that ‘spark joy’. She also advises that everything has a designated and permanent place. All the unnecessary remaining items that did not spark joy or has no place be removed from your home. This declutters and organizes your space since everything has a permanent place. From Marie Kondo’s book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing she writes:
“Keep only things that speak to your heart. Then take the plunge and discard all the rest”.
Not ready to go through your whole house? Personally, I find it overwhelming to follow her method of tackling categories. According to her going by category would mean collecting all the items of clothing in my home, make a big pile, sort and then place them back. In theory this makes perfect sense but in practice I find it easier to do one section of my home at a time sometimes only one drawer at a time.
Although I may not not follow her KonMarie method exactly, I have applied some of her tips on how to get organized and folding my clothes to save space and time is one of them. See below for step by step instructions on how to fold!
“Clothing storage: Fold it right and solve your storage problems..The goal is to fold each piece of clothing into a simple, smooth rectangle”
~Marie Kondo
How To fold pants
Begin by laying your pants flat.
Fold your pants in half with the pockets facing out
Fold in half by bringing the bottom of the legs to meet the top.
Fold the pants upward in thirds or fourths depending on the height of your drawer.
Once folded your pants should be able to stand vertically.
Place into drawer side by side like files so you can easily see what is in the drawer!
How to fold shirts
In her book Marie Kondo writes instructions on how to fold clothing to help create an organized drawer and save space. She basically says to fold clothes into a small rectangle. She writes “First, fold each lengthwise side of the garment toward the center (such as the left hand, then right-hand, sides of a shit) and tuck the sleeves in to make a long rectangle shape. It doesn’t matter how you fold the sleeves. Next pick up one short end of the rectangle and fold it toward the other short end. Then fold again, in the same manner, in halves or in thirds. The number of folds should be adjusted so that the folded clothing when standing on edge fits the height of the drawer.”
Begin by laying your shirt flat.
Fold your shirt inward halfway and make sure the sleeves are flat.
Fold the other side inward in line with the other side and make sure the sleeves are flat.
Bring the bottom half of the shirt up to the top into a rectangle.
Fold up into half or thirds depending on the depth of your drawer.
Once folded the shirt should be able to stand up on it’s own. Place side by side like files inside your drawer.
After you have folded your clothes a few times with this method it becomes a good habit! Now I can not imagine folding and organizing my clothing drawers any other way. It makes it easy to see exactly what is in the drawer and saves me time from having to look for items!
